Core Keeper Base Building Guide — Room Rules, NPC Housing and Automation
A good Core Keeper base is more than a pile of chests. This base building guide covers the room system, NPC move-in rules, bed mechanics and the automation basics that keep your underground hub running while you explore.
Room rules that actually matter
Rooms are the core building block of a Core Keeper base. The game recognizes a room when:
- The enclosed area is between 2×2 and 8×8 tiles (smaller or larger rooms don’t register)
- It has a door and a bed
- It contains the required item for the NPC you want (each NPC has a specific item)
- No players are within 30 tiles of the room for roughly a minute
If any condition fails, the room won’t count — and NPCs won’t move in.
Respawn points: use beds strategically
Your spawn point is the Core or your most recently slept-in bed. Two practical uses:
- Boss prep: place a bed near a boss arena, sleep briefly, and you’ll respawn at that bed instead of running back from the Core.
- Exploration outposts: mini-bases with a bed, a few chests and a workbench let you operate far from home without long corpse runs.
Base location checklist
- Near the Core: the Core is your main fast-travel anchor and power source — build the first hub within ~30–60 tiles.
- Flat, clear ground: dirt walls are quick to flatten with a shovel.
- Close to a room you’ll use early: a lake (water access) and a farm patch reduce early travel.
Automation basics
- Smelting arrays: build several Furnaces side by side; feed them with chests of ore and they process in parallel while you’re away.
- Crafting stations as rooms: workbenches, furnaces and cooking pots work best when each is its own registered room with a door.
- Farming: hoe the ground, plant seeds, water regularly — crops restore food and fuel cooking. Gardening skill shortens grow times as it levels.
- Later-game conveyor belts: belts and automation machines unlock in later tiers; the Base Layout Planner helps you sketch conveyor layouts before you commit resources.
FAQ
Why won’t an NPC move into my room? Check the three conditions: size between 2×2 and 8×8, a door + bed, the NPC’s required item, and nobody within 30 tiles for about a minute.
Can rooms be bigger than 8×8? They can exist, but they won’t register as a valid room for NPC purposes — split large halls into separate rooms.
How do I change my spawn point? Sleep in a bed. Your respawn switches to that bed until you sleep somewhere else.
