Core Keeper First Hour Guide — World Creation, Tools and Your First Boss

Last updated: 2026-10-18

The Core Keeper getting started experience is built around one loop: craft a workbench, make stronger tools, mine tougher walls, find better ores, and repeat. This guide walks through world creation, the first hour, and the three early bosses you need to beat before the Core powers up.

World creation: what to pick

Select Start Game from the main menu to create a world. You can also join a friend’s world from the Steam friends list — Core Keeper has native multiplayer with no dedicated server required, and more than the officially stated 8 players can connect.

Setting Effect
Difficulty: Normal Standard enemy and boss health
Difficulty: Hard All enemies and bosses have doubled base health and damage; 50% more loot slots in boss chests; no unique hard-mode items
World name / icon Cannot be changed in-game afterwards

Your character and world saves are stored separately, so one character can visit multiple worlds. Pick a character background — each gives a small starting loadout:

Background Bonus
Chef +3 Cooking, 1 Cooking Pot, 8 Mushroom
Gardener +3 Gardening, 1 Copper Hoe, 1 Watering Can
Fisherman +3 Fishing, 1 Wood Fishing Rod, 3 Food Ration
Nomad No items or skill bonus

On death, a Normal character drops inventory into a gravestone and respawns at the Core or your bed; a Hardcore character loses everything and the save is deleted.

The wood-to-iron tool loop

You spawn in front of the Core, an ancient machine surrounded by roots. Break the roots for Wood, then craft four basics from your inventory: Torch, Wood Pickaxe, Wood Shovel and the Basic Workbench.

The upgrade loop repeats all game:

  1. Craft a workbench
  2. Use the workbench to craft stronger tools
  3. Use stronger tools to mine tougher walls for stronger resources
  4. Use those resources to craft a stronger workbench — repeat

Tier 1 — Copper: Wood Pickaxe → mine Copper Ore in The Undergrounds. Look for rising glitter (rooms, plants) and large static sparkles (ore veins in walls). Smelt copper in a Furnace, craft Copper Pickaxe + tools at the Basic Workbench.

Tier 2 — Tin: Copper tools → cross the chasm (build a Wood Bridge) into The Clay Caves. If you find The Forgotten Ruins first, walk the opposite direction from the Core. Mine Tin Ore, craft the Tin Workbench.

Tier 3 — Iron: Head to The Forgotten Ruins for Iron Ore (you may already have Gold Ore from Clay Caves / Ruins). Craft the Iron Workbench, then it’s boss time.

The three early bosses

You must defeat three bosses to activate the three effigies next to the Core. Each drops a required item:

Boss Location from Core Drops Recommended gear
Glurch the Abominable Mass ~65 tiles, random angle Glurch Eye Tin or better
Ghorm the Devourer ~250 tiles, constantly circles the Core on an 8-tile-wide track Ghorm’s Horn Iron
Hive Mother ~330 tiles, in the Larva Hive (sub-biome of Clay Caves) Heart of the Hive Mother Iron

Tip: craft the Hive Mother Scanner after activating Glurch’s effigy to locate the hive. After defeating each boss, place its drop on the matching effigy — each activated effigy becomes a workbench with new recipes. Activate all three and the Core powers up, opening the rest of the underground.

How many players can join a world? Native multiplayer supports more than the official 8-player limit; boss health scales with connected players (with diminishing returns per additional player).

What do I craft first? Torch, Wood Pickaxe, Wood Shovel, then the Basic Workbench.
